Peter Shults is a partner at Shults Law Firm LLP. His practice focuses on international litigation and arbitration, commercial litigation, and other disputes. Peter has extensive experience representing sovereign States in disputes with other States and with foreign investors, in front of the world’s principal dispute-resolution bodies and U.S. courts. These disputes often involve claims for hundreds of millions or billions of dollars. He also has represented sovereign States in their attempts to extradite high-priority fugitives from the United States. Additionally, he has represented professional athletes in navigating the procedures of the World Anti-Doping Agency and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
In addition to his broad international law practice, Peter has extensive experience in commercial litigation. He has represented local, national, and multi-national corporations in state and federal courts, including in cases involving some of the world’s largest corporations. He also has an appellate practice, representing individuals, businesses, and sovereign States in state and federal appellate courts. Peter is Chair of the Federal Practice Committee of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas.
Peter also has a broad pro bono practice. He has served as counsel to international and constitutional legal experts on two amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court, involving international law and human rights. He also has represented immigrants, particularly unaccompanied refugee children, in navigating U.S. federal immigration law, and he has helped U.S. military veterans attempt to obtain redress for discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Peter has taught international law and international human rights law as an adjunct professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law. Peter also is a board member of Global Ties Arkansas, a nonprofit organization that oversees foreign visitors brought to Arkansas by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Congress, as well as other agencies and groups.
Prior to private practice, Peter was a law clerk for the Honorable J. Leon Holmes of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas.
